fly fishing classes

Ever think about learning to fly fish, but you're not sure where to start?  I offer fly fishing classes and lessons in Upstate New York, spring, summer, and fall.  While this fly fishing class is geared toward those new to the sport, I'm happy to customize a class for more experienced anglers (example being a contact/euro nymphing class).  Jumping into fly fishing, or the idea of a guided trip without ever having held a fly rod, can feel daunting.  This fly fishing class is designed to ease and introduce new anglers to the sport.  I'm confident by the end of the class, and with a little patience, you'll find a fun new outdoor activity you can enjoy with friends and family.  I enjoy teaching and all ages are welcome to join the fun!

how it works

  • 2 Part Class - fly fishing class can be accommodated in (1) six hour day, or (2) three hour days.

    • 1st Class - introduction to fly fishing, gear, how to rig a rod/reel/line, basic knots, learning to fly cast

      • class is in a park like setting and runs about 3-4 hours

    • 2nd Class - On the water!  We talk about wading safely, approaching the stream, reading water, and about 2 - 3 hours of fully guided instructional fly fishing!

  • You pick when classes are convenient for you and your group!

  • Classes are private for you and/or your group.  I do not combine you with other fly fishing groups.

  • All gear is provided (except waders, which are available to rent).  Water and light snacks are always provided.

  • A small collection of flies will be given to each angler to start your own collection (some may be hand-tied by me).

  • $375 for the first angler and $50 for each additional angler up to 4 people

  • for groups larger than 4 anglers, please contact me for group pricing

  • $100 deposit is required to lock in the date

lessons

Various types of lessons are offered.  Do you have a fly rod you bought or were given, but you're not sure how to use it?  Basic casting instruction in Central New York is an option.  Are you heading out for the first time of the year and need a little refining to your technique?  Do you have a big fishing trip planned someplace warm on the bow of a flats boat where heavy rods and hard double hauls are required?  It is always a good idea to practice casting before such a big trip.  I know the guide poling you and your boat mate will appreciate your practice as well.  Lessons are available to everyone, regardless of experience.

  • lessons for beginners - I provide all gear necessary to learn to fly cast.  No experience is necessary.  Learn the basics of rigging, set up, and casting fundamentals.

  • lessons for intermediate or advanced casters - focus is on refining technique, casting and matching different lines, hauling line, water hauling, shooting line, etc.  I strongly encourage the use of your own rod so you may continue to grow accustomed to your own gear.  My gear will be provided as well.

  • pricing - $100 for 1 hour --- $150 for 2 hours

    • prices are for up to 2 people

    • for groups larger than 2 people, there will be an additional fee of $25/person
