fly fishing classes

Have you thought about learning to fly fish, but you're not sure where to start?  I offer classes spring through fall geared toward individuals and groups new to the sport.  I understand jumping into fly fishing can seem intimidating and the idea of a guided trip without ever having handled a fly rod can appear daunting.  I've come up with a 1-2-3 class program designed to teach newcomers and grow the sport.  I'm confident at the end of the class, and with a little patience, you'll find a new outdoor activity you can enjoy with your friends and family.  All ages are welcome to join!

how it works

  • Series of three classes -

    • first class - introduction to fly fishing, gear, rigging your gear, basic knots, basic casting

      • class is in a park like setting and runs about 2 hours

    • second class - stream-side introduction, wading safely, approaching the stream, reading water, more casting, and maybe a little fishing time at the end

      • class is stream-side and will run about 2 hours

    • last class - After a brief refresher, we put everything we've learned together and enjoy an evening on the water.

      • 2 hours of guided fishing with me by your side

  • You pick when classes are convenient for you and your group!  Pick three consecutive days (example Mon. - Wed.) or pick one evening per week for 3 weeks (example is 3 consecutive Tuesday evenings).  The class can also be completed in one 5-6 hour day as well.

  • All gear (except waders) is provided.  Cold water is always provided, and light snacks are provided during a single day class.  A small collection of flies will be given out at the end of the class to each angler.

  • $250 for the first angler and $50 for each additional angler up to 4 people

  • for groups larger than 4 anglers, please contact me for group pricing

  • $100 payment is due prior to the start of the class.  The remaining balance is due at the end of the class.

Various types of lessons are offered.  Do you have a fly rod you bought or were given, but you're not sure how to use it?  Basic casting instruction is an option.  Are you heading out for the first time of the year and need a little refining to your technique?  Do you have a big fishing trip planned someplace warm on the bow of a flats boat where heavy rods and hard double hauls are required?  It is always a good idea to practice casting before such a big trip.  I know the guide poling you and your boat mate will appreciate your practice as well.  Lessons are available to everyone, regardless of experience.

  • lessons for beginners - I provide all gear necessary to learn to fly cast.  No experience is necessary.  Learn the basics of rigging, set up, and casting fundamentals.

  • lessons for intermediate or advanced casters - focus is on refining technique, casting and matching different lines, hauling line, water hauling, shooting line, etc.  I strongly encourage the use of your own rod so you may continue to grow accustomed to your own gear.  My gear will be provided as well.

  • pricing - $60 for 1 hour --- $100 for 2 hours

    • prices are for 1-3 people

    • for groups larger than 3 people, there will be an additional fee of $25/person
